Jason DANZIGER / PSYCH.RAUM lecture in London @ "ARCHITECTURE AND MENTAL HEALTH", a conference organised by ELFT and the Royal College of Psychiatrists

Architect BDA Jason Danziger and Consulting Psychiatrist Dr. Martin Voss were invited to a spring 2017 symposium in London titled Architecture and Mental Health: Inspired environments that promote care. Organised by ELFT (the East London NHS Foundation Trust) in collaboration with the Arts Special Interest Group (ASIG) of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the symposium will focus on methods and theory to support interdisciplinary project optimisation for Mental Health professionals of all stripes. We are very much looking forward to meeting and exchanging ideas with other members of the Symposium, including our co-invitees architect Dr Evangelia Chrysikou, social scientist Dr Lambros Malafouris, and psychiatrist/architect Dr Nikolina Jovanovic. AKG @ SOTERIA-BERLIN! DIE AKG BESUCHT DIE SOTERIA / AKG DIRECTORS VISIT THE SOTERIA

Der Vorsitzende des AKG - Architekten für Krankenhausbau und Gesundheitswesen e.V., Dipl.-Ing. Christian Pelzeter sowie die Geschäftsführerin, Frau Ute Raubach, haben am 13. Dezember 2016 die Soteria Berlin besucht, um Dr. Voss seine Urkunde persönlich zu überreichen und die Räume zu besichtigen. Wir bedanken uns bei beiden für ihre Zeit und ihr Interesse an unserer Arbeit!

Inzwischen haben wir von der AKG-Jury den Begründungstext für die Besondere Anerkennung für herausragende Gesundheitsbauten 2016, erhalten, die uns für die Soteria am 16. November 2016 auf der MEDICA-Konferenz in Düsseldorf verliehen wurde:

Besondere Anerkennung - Soteria Berlin

Es ist ein historisches Krankenhausgebäude, in dem auf einer Etage die Räume für eine therapeutische Wohngruppe eingerichtet wurden. Es ging dem initiativ gewordenen Arzt und dem Architekten um eine „Entinstitutionalisierung“ der Räume. Nichts erinnert mehr an die vormalige Krankenstation. Mit wenig Aufwand anspruchsvoll und liebevoll gestaltete Räume unterstützen das Projekt „Familienersatz“ für die Jugendlichen, das Lebensraum und Geborgenheit für die schutzbedürftige Klientel bietet. Die mit dem sensiblen Farb- und Lichtkonzept sowie den individuellen Möbeln sorgsam geplante Atmosphäre wird als Bestandteil der Therapie gesehen. Ein ungewöhnlicher Ansatz, der neue Wege für die Konzeption und Gestaltung von psychiatrischen Krankeneinrichtungen aufzeigt.

Insbesondere der interdisziplinäre Prozess, in den sowohl die Ideen des ärztlichen Leiters als auch des Architekten einflossen, verdient Anerkennung und Nachahmung. In vorbildlicher Weise zeigt das Projekt, welches Potenzial in scheinbar hoffnungslos überalterten neogotischen Krankenhausbauten steckt.

The Chairman of the AKG - Architects for Hospital Construction and the Healthcare Services e.V., Dipl.-Ing. Christian Pelzeter and its Managing Director, Ms. Ute Raubach, visited the Soteria/Berlin on December 13, 2016 to personally present Dr. Voss with his Award Certificate and to experience the space themselves. We thank both for their time and ongoing interest in our work!

In the meantime, we have also received the written substantiation (rationale) from the AKG Jury concerning their decision to award a Special Commendation for Outstanding Healthcare Buildings 2016, which the Soteria was formally presented with at the MEDICA conference in Düsseldorf on November 16, 2016 - take a look below: 

Special Commendation for Outstanding Healthcare Buildings 2016 

It is a historical hospital building in which the rooms for a therapeutic residential group were set up on one floor. The doctor and the architect set out to "de-institutionalize" the spaces. Nothing reminds one of the former hospital ward. With little effort, sophisticated and lovingly designed spaces support the project as a "replacement family" for its youthful patients, which provides a zone of safety and security for a clientele in need of such protection. The atmosphere is carefully planned with a sensitive color and light concept as well as a series of custom designed furniture which is understood as part of the therapy. An unusual approach that reveals new paths for the conception and design of psychiatric hospitals.

In particular, the interdisciplinary process, in which both the ideas of the medical director and the architect flowed, deserves recognition and imitation. In an exemplary manner, the project demonstrates the potential which lies in neo-gothic hospital buildings that seem hopelessly over-aged. (Translation: thinkbuild architecture bda)

"Soteria Berlin: Spatial Atmospheric Mechanisms supporting Milleautherapie" - Joint Lecture by Dr. Martin Voss & Jason Danziger at the École d'Architecture Val de Seine (Paris, France) - 20. May 2016

Consulting Psychiatrist Dr. Martin Voss and Architect Jason Danziger will present the Soteria Berlin as a case study at the 2016 APAQESM Conference (2ème Rencontre Architecture & Psychiatrie), an international interdisciplinary conference at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture Paris-Val de Seine this coming May 20, 2016. The Symposium is organized by the Association pour la Promotion de l’Assurance Qualité en Santé Mentale (APAQESM) which is based in Paris. The presentation will begin at 14h and will focus on how the Soteria can be seen as a test case for the creation of active Milieu Therapy spaces (Atmosphere as Therapeutikum) and will also share the narrative about how the spatial design strategies were deployed to "de- institutionalize" the ward.

Die Soteria Berlin wird zum Bundesarchitekturpreis Nike 2016 nominiert / The Soteria Berlin has been nominated for the German national architecture prize Nike 2016

Laut Auslober, “der BDA-Architekturpreis ‘Große Nike’ soll herausragende Beiträge zu Architektur und Städtebau würdigen und hervorheben, die die Vielfalt architektonischer Qualität offenbaren … Eine Jury aus nationalen und internationalen Juroren wird an die eingereichten Nominierungen aller BDA-Landesverbände jeweils eine "Nike" in insgesamt sechs Kategorien vergeben: Atmosphäre, Symbolik, Fügung, Komposition, Neuerung, und soziales Engagement." Überreicht wird die Auszeichnung am 2. Juli 2016 im Rahmen des BDA-Tag in Karlsruhe.

We are proud to announce that the Soteria Berlin has been nominated for the 2016 Nike German National Architecture Prize. According to the organisers, “the BDA Architecture Prize ‘Große Nike’ recognizes outstanding contributions to architecture and urban development which reveal the diversity of architectural quality ... A jury of national and international judges will review all nominations submitted by the BDA regional associations and award a ‘Nike’ in each of six categories: atmosphere, symbolism, ‘Fügung’ (integration/addition), composition, innovation, and social engagement." The awards will be presented on July 2, 2016 during the BDA yearly meeting in Karlsruhe.

Wildfang2 Kindergarten expansion is nearing completion / Wildfang2 Kindergarten Erweiterung kurz vor der Fertigstellung

The Wildfang2 (Kindergarten on the Roof) expansion is nearing completion. The project offers diverse learning activity spaces (library, project kitchen, sleeping, movement...) for an additional 25 children as well as increased office rooms and a redesigned entrance area. Check back soon for photos of the completed project. In the meantime, see some construction photos here.

Die Wildfang2-Erweiterung (Kindergarten auf dem Dach) steht kurz vor der Fertigstellung. Das Projekt bietet Platz für 25 Kinder und diverse Lernaktivitäten (Bibliothek, Projekt-Küche, Schlafen, Bewegung), sowie weitere  Büroräume und einen neu gestalteten Haupteingangsbereich. Check back soon für Fotos des abgeschlossenen Projekts. Der leitende Oberarzt Martin Voss und der Architekt Jason Danziger werden aus medizinischer und gestalterischer Perspektive die Soteria Berlin vorstellen. Hierbei handelt es sich um eine neu eröffnete psychiatrische Station des St. Hedwig-Krankenhauses, die sich vorrangig an jüngere Patienten mit einer Ersterkrankung aus dem schizophrenen Formenkreis richtet. Neben einem zurückhaltenden Einsatz von Psychopharmaka stützt sich die Behandlung dabei insbesondere auf die therapeutische Wirkung eines gestalteten Milieus. Welche Faktoren wirken bei dieser s.g. Milieutherapie? Wie lassen sie sich beschreiben, analysieren, gestalten und mit psychiatrischen Erklärungsmodellen schizophrener Krankheitsbilder in Verbindung bringen? Wie können Krankheit und Wohlergehen, architektonischer Raum und soziale Gemeinschaft im atmosphärischen Spannungsfeld zwischen Bauen, Wohnen, Fühlen und Denken verstanden werden?
